Detailed description of Whiskey Creek Golf Club

Whiskey Creek Golf Club, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Ijamsville, Maryland.

Whiskey Creek first opened for play in 2000. The course was designed by J. Michael Poellot, and Ernie Els.

Whiskey Creek is a Par-72 course that plays to 7,001 yards from the back tees. The course rating is 74.5 and the slope rating of 137.

Hole #18 is a par-5 550 yard beautiful monster. Golf Magazine, in their April 2000 issue said of this hole, "a spectacular finishing hole". The 18th hole at Whiskey Creek is one of the most dramatic and unique finishing holes in the Mid-Atlantic. With the ruins of 19th century stone house once belonging to German immigrants standing in the middle of the fairway 275 yards from the championship tees, this down hill par 5 offers many strategic choices to the player. Playing to the left side of the fairway off the tee will provide the bold player with an opportunity to go for the green in two. Playing to the right side of the fairway off the tee is the safer route, although the third shot must be played over a small pond guarding the green.

Interesting layout with some great views! Great variety of holes. Keep it in the fairway because some of the sidehill lies in the rough are difficult!

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area

Real nice track. Great Ernie Els design. Course is in very good condition. Play in afternoon so you don't pay over $100 for a public track. It's worth $75 at best.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again

Beautiful course. Great layout & conditions. Nice clubhouse & staff. Very much over-priced for the area. Similar courses are available for much less. I'd play it a lot, if it were priced lower.

The first hole (for women) might make you think this is an easy course. It isn't. But the course is in great shape, pace of play perfect and it just plain looks good. Forward tees well forward. Thanks.

Have played Whiskey Creek a number of times, most recently 9-9-09, for $65 as a senior, which is a VERY good deal for this wonderful course.

Absolutely awesome design, attributed to Ernie Els. Takes advantage of every wrinkle in the varied terrain, with no two holes remotely alike, and LOTS of elevation change. Not too much water, although there are a few ponds that come into play. Far more demanding for us average guys are the many bunkers cleverly located right where our drives fall... Tee boxes are large and flat. Fariways are generally fairly wide, with a few notable exceptions like #14, where there is water and sand on the left, and a big old sycamore (?) tree guarding the right, netting a landing area about 20 paces wide. Hole #18 is a good sized par 5, and is the signature hole, featuring the ruins of a large stone house in the middle of the fairway about 220 off the White tees. A somewhat daunting vista, but much more playable than it initially appears: our foursome had a birdie and a par there (and two doubles, also). Bunkers are plentiful, some are pretty deep, and many have some serious contour to them. Greens are very large, undulating, and putt fast and true. Conditions on 9-9 were excellent by any measure.

Clubhouse is quite nice, with a well-stocked pro shop and a very nice bar/lounge, both staffed with attentive and competent people.

I was a little surprised at how empty the course was: when we arrived at about 0930, there were only about 15 cars in the lot, and while we were playing, we never had to wait to hit a shot. Course is pretty easy to find: only about four miles off I-270. I don't think the course is walkable, especially for us older guys, but the young studs might like to try.

I give my highest recommendation...it is well worth the money and the trip. BTW, I marked "Not vacation worthy," only because there are no accomodations relatively nearby as one might find with a resort; closest hotels are in Frederick, MD, which is about ten miles away.

Would travel: 60-120 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Ranks with the best in this price level, Best course in the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
